Have you heard the saying A Church on Every Corner? Well in Kingsburg, that isn’t an expression but a reality.
Growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s Kingsburg businesses would close, with rare exception. Draper Street would empty and the churches would fill. Kingsburg citizens attended Sunday School, Sunday Morning Services or Mass, Sunday Evening, Catechism Classes and Wednesday night youth groups. Youth for Christ and Young Life were active and Summer Bible School was always full. Whether a worshiper was Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, Buddhist, or other denomination, there were services for all people of faith.
There is still an emphasis on faith in Kingsburg. There are over 20 churches in Kingsburg… that’s one for each 600 residents. Kingsburg still has an active Young Life program, and the churches open the community to worship both in person and on-line. Services are held in English and Spanish. Worship welcomes all.
The Kingsburg Times is introducing a section on faith called Focus on Faith. We are planning to feature one church for each issue, and other faith related content. We hope this gives voice to those want to share their faith walk with the reading public.
Personally, faith is profoundly important in my life, and the lives of many others in Kingsburg. We hope these articles will enrich the spirit as well as the mind.
