“CenCal Fury” 10 and Under Softball
“Attitude, Effort, and Have Fun!” This motto from Coach Bryan Cogburn was one of the inspirations Adelyn Van Laar, age 10, cited for the success of her softball team CenCal Fury. She and her team members won 1st place in the State of California’s North Cal State Championship. Despite setbacks that came from Covid, meaning delays and changing game locations depending on individual county restrictions, this 10-year-old and under team didn’t let anything stop them. About Covid, Adelyn said softball was a relief. “We actually got to play this year” she shared enthusiastically, “and we didn’t have to wear masks (during play). We got to be normal!”
CenCal Fury athletes are inspired by their coaches Bryan Cogburn and Sherman Dix who encourage them in a strict but positive way. They encouraged the girls to maintain a positive attitude, reminding them that “The only team that can beat you… is you.”
According to Adelyn, how did the girls feel when they won the state championship? “We were so excited! We jumped and screamed and ran together as a group! The parents were excited too!”
